Tigers improve to 4-0 in HON

The Northwestern Tigers softball team continued its dominance in the Heart O’ North Conference with 15-3 and 18-2 wins over the Ladysmith Lumberjacks Saturday in Brule. Both games were five innings.

The Tigers, who improve to 4-0 in league play and 4-1 overall, banged out 29 hits in the two games, including two home runs by Laryssa Vik and one home run apiece by Lexi Janigo,  Cassidy Friend and Abby Schultz.

Northwestern has 10 home runs this season.

Vik went 6-for-7 on the day with two home runs and 11 RBIs. She homered in the first inning of the first game, then belted a grand slam an inning later. The freshman now has four home runs this season.

Maddie Spangenberg went 3-for-3 and scored four runs in game one, and in game two she stole five bases to give her 11 stolen  bases on the season.

Also in game two for the Tigers, Samantha Clark went 5-for-5, Janigo was 4-for-4 with her home run and Schultz homered.

Cheyenne Johnson pitched eight of the 10 innings on the day with seven strikeouts. She was also 2-for-2 with the bat in game two.

On April 22, the Tigers defeated Chetek 26-2.

The Tigers had 26 hits, with home runs by Friend and Vik. Northwestern also got two doubles and two triples from Janigo; Clark and Johnson both had four hits; Hailey Eller doubled twice; Karaline Green was 3-for-5; and Spangenberg stole two bases.

The Tigers have four games scheduled this week. They play at Cumberland Tuesday and host Hayward Thursday, then wrap up the week at Spooner for a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday.
