Northwestern High School graduate Olivia Amber wrapped up her first season of collegiate competition recently at the NCAA Division I Skiing Championships.

Amber, who skies for Colby College (Maine), placed 26th in the women’s 5-kilometer classic March 6 on the first day of Nordic competition at Soldier Hollow Resort in Utah. She finished in a time of 14 minutes, 56.9 seconds and was the final skier under 15 minutes in the field of 38 skiers.

Teammate Amy Bianco (Ely, Minn.) finished 36th with a time of 15:26.9.

In the 15K freestyle race on March 8, Amber placed 33rd and Bianco was 34th. Amber had a time of 44:34.70, and Bianco finished in 45:21.60.

Both Amber and Bianco are freshmen at Colby College.

“It was a great week of racing by two first-years in a much older and experienced field. Very few Nordic skiers ever qualify in their first year,” said Tracey Cote, Colby head coach.

“No doubt Amy and Olivia will be returning for many more nationals and will be using this experience to climb up the results sheet.”

Anja Gruber, of the University of Vermont, won the women’s 5K classic in 13:38.4; and Eva Severrus, of the University of New Mexico, won the women’s 15K freestyle in 40:15.1.
