The Northwestern High School wrestling team won six matches, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers fell to the Barron Golden Bears 42-26 Thursday night in Maple.

For the Tigers, Jonathan Nelson (126), Jacob Carlson (160), Jackson Doller (170), Jay Karich (182) and Justin Little (220) won by pins and Jamison Pflug (126) won by forfeit.

Barron jumped out to a 21-0 lead, but the Tigers battled back to make it 36-30 with two matches remaining.

“Barron has a nice team, but out guys never quit,” NHS coach Bob Coleman said. “We had the match within our grasps, but we split the final two matches to come up short.”

Coleman noted the efforts of Connor Wheeler and James Nelson.

“Our two little guys went up against very solid wrestlers, but set the tone for us by going toe to toe with them,” Coleman said. “True they pinned us, but just the confidence and intensity they went out there with was encouraging for the team.”

Two other guys that spurred the team on with their aggressiveness and pushing themselves were Chance Brochu and Dylan Tribbey.

“Chance was pinned, but day after day he comes to practice with a mission and works hard,” Coleman said. “Dylan is another one who battles every match. He lost a hard fought battle, but he really wrestles hard every time he steps on the mat.”

The Tigers will compete in the Spartans Wrestling Classic at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Superior High School gym.
