SPARTAN ROUND-UP: SHS swimmers drop two meets

The Superior High School girls swim team dropped a pair of home dual meets last week in the SHS pool.

The Spartans lost to Duluth East 105-80 Tuesday and to Duluth Denfeld 122-63 Thursday.

The Spartans won four events Thursday against the Denfeld Hunters.

Shelby Bresnahan won the 50 free and 100 backstroke; Erin Walpole won the 100 breaststroke; and Kaelyn DeRoche finished first in the 200 individual medley.

Superior won five events in the meet with the East Greyhounds.

Sophia Hanson, Walpole, DeRoche and Bresnahan teamed up to win the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay; Bresnahan won the 50 free; Walpole finished first in the 100 butterfly; and Taylee Anderson led a 1-2 Spartan finish in the diving with Kate Lisak.

The Spartans host Cloquet at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Cross county

The season ended for the Spartans at Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional meet at Menomonie.

The Superior boys and girls both finished in 12th place.

Freshman Draden Jensen finished in 35th place for the Spartan boys; while senior Sophia Kintop was the fastest Superior girl in 48th place.

The only other senior running for Superior was Jack Androski, who finished in 61st place.

Boys soccer

The Spartans’ season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to Wausau West in a WIAA Division 1 regional game Thursday in Wausau.

The Spartans wrapped up their second straight winning season with a record of 13-2-3. They were 8-6-4 in 2016.

Wausau West went to lose to Hudson 2-0 in Saturday’s regional final.
