Gronski scores four TDs, Spartans blank the Huskies

Body:

Gunnar Gronski scored four touchdowns and blocked a field-goal attempt to lead the Superior High School football team to a season-ending 28-0 win over Eau Claire North Friday night at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The Spartans snapped a six-game losing streak to finish with records of 3-6 overall and 1-6 in the Big Rivers Conference. The Huskies’ season ends at 0-9 and 0-7.

After a scoreless first quarter, ECN threatened to score first when a 12-play drive moved the ball inside the 10-yard line. But the game remained scoreless when G. Gronski blocked an Old Abes’ 26-yard field-goal attempt.

The Spartans followed with four straight G. Gronski touchdowns and extra-point kicks by Dominic D’Auria.

Gronski ran up the middle untouched from 19 yards out on his first TD, then plunged over from a yard out with 6:01 remaining in the first half.

Superior’s first touchdown was helped set up with a 27-yard run by quarterback Jarrett Gronski and runs of 16 and 27 by G. Gronski.

The second scoring drive included J. Gronski passes of 37 yards to Elijah Owens and 24 yards to Corey Sanders.

The Spartans scored the first two times they had the ball in the second half.

Superior overcame a handful of penalties on the opening drive of the third quarter and eventually scored on G. Gronski’s 7-yard TD run.

Six plays after Luke Drougas returned an interception 52 yards to the 18-yard line, G. Gronski scored from a yard out with 2:38 left in the third quarter.

“I was pleased with our effort overall, although some of us took a bit to get going,” SHS coach Bob DeMeyer said. “I was also happy that we were able to get all of our seniors significant playing time. That can be a sensitive issue and often has an impact on your team culture. But we have a great group of seniors, not all of them were starters, yet, they were all class acts and great teammates.

“The last game is always difficult. Whether you’re hoisting a gold ball over your head or not qualifying for the playoffs, it’s still sad to see it come to an end. We have a very special group of young men that we enjoyed being with every day.”

SPARTAN SPIN: Superior defeated ECN for the seventh straight time and now leads the series 31-15 since 1974.
