Spartans win 3 more games

The Superior High School boys soccer team picked up three more wins last week to improve to 12-1-1 on the season.

Blake Hanson’s goal with eight seconds remaining gave the Spartans a 2-1 win Thursday at Hermantown. Superior then defeated Rice Lake (1-0) and Somerset (2-1) Saturday in Rice Lake.

The Spartans, 4-1 in the Lake Superior Conference, play at Duluth Denfeld at 6:30 p.m. today and host Ashland at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Eddy O’Brien gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead over Hermantown with an unassisted goal 12 minutes into the game.

Hermantown tied it up in the 55th minute on David Birkeland’s goal.

Cal Berti had five saves for Superior and A.J. Harris stopped 10 shots for Hermantown.

Jarrett Kallinen and Brandon Conklin scored Superior’s goals in the win over Somerset.

Hanson assisted on both goals.

Kallinen also scored the only goal in the win over Rice Lake, with the assist going to Alex Hanson.

Berti had 14 saves in Saturday’s wins.

SPARTAN SPIN: Hanson leads the area in scoring with 20 goals and 11 assists.
