SPARTAN ROUND-UP: Superior rallies past the Rails

The Superior High School volleyball team rallied past the Proctor Rails Thursday night in the SHS gym.

After losing the first game 25-18, the Spartans won the next three games by scores of 27-25, 25-16 and 25-17 for the 3-1 victory.

Autumn Siers led the Spartans with 36 set assists, 18 digs and four ace serves. Also for the Spartans, Chloe Wilson had 23 kills and eight digs; Caleigh Jensen had seven digs and nine kills; Katie Paulson had four blocks; and Hannah Hughes had 33 digs and five ace serves.

Sam Pogatchnik had 17 kills, 21 digs, four blocks and three ace serves for Proctor. Grace Riddle added 31 set assists and seven digs.

The Spartans, now 2-3 in the Lake Superior Conference, is at Duluth East at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls Tennis

The season ended for the Spartans as they failed to pick up a point at Monday’s WIAA Division 1 Subsectional at Eau Claire Memorial.

The host Old Abes won the team title with 24 points.

The Spartans wrapped up the regular season with a 6-1 loss Friday evening at Hermantown.

Madisen Myer picked up Superior’s win, defeating Megan Chaffey 7-5, 4-6, 15-13 in the No. 1 singles match.

Senior members of the SHS squad are Katherine Caven, Madelyn Graham, Chantelle Gregory, Melissa Harty, Desiree Jensen, Madison Massoglia, Alee Milinkovich-Gray, Zoey Moilanen and Addie Young.

Cross country

The Spartans ran in Thursday’s Hibbing Rotary Invitational with the girls finishing in third place and the boys in fifth.

Duluth East won the girls team title with 23 points. The Greyhounds had six runners finish in the top 10, led by Molly Wesberg, who won the race in 20 minutes, 13.9 seconds.

Superior finished with 104 points, led by Jennifer Nummi, who finished 13th in 22:38.1.

Cloquet won the boys title with 28 points, led by Aidan Ripp and Blaine Bong, who finished 1-2 with times of 17:37 and 17:53, respectively.

Superior finished in fifth place with 132 points. Freshman Drayden Jensen was the top Spartan, finishing 17th in 19:22.

Girls swimming

The Spartans finished 10th at Saturday’s Duluth East Greyhound Invitational.

Faribault won the team title with 332 points. Superior finished with 67 points. No Spartans finished in the top two in any event.

The Spartans’ home meet with Rice Lake Thursday has been moved to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12.

Superior hosts Proctor on Oct. 10.

Girls golf

The season came to an end for the Spartans at Monday’s WIAA Division 1 Girls Golf Sectional at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Lauren Raboin finished tied for 33rd place and Abby Johnson tied for 116th.

Raboin, a junior, finished with a score of 107, while Johnson, a senior, came in at 116.

Lexi Meade of Eau Claire Memorial took medalist honors with a 76.
