The Superior High School athletic department announced the hiring of two new head coaches Friday morning.

Dave Kontny will replace Phil Roe as the head coach of the girls basketball team, and Marc Franta will take over for Kayla Chilstrom as the head coach of girls hockey.

Kontny, currently a physical education teacher at SHS, had a record of 157-59 during his tenure as the head coach of the SHS boys basketball team.

His teams won seven Lake Superior Conference championships, five regional championships and in 2011 won the sectional championship and advanced to the WIAA Super-Tuesday game.

Franta, Chilstrom’s assistant coach last season, has been an active member of the Superior Amateur Hockey Association and is a current SAHA board member. He has various coaching experience in many levels of hockey.

“We welcome Dave and Marc to the SHS coaching staff and wish them many years of success teaching life skills, values and character to our student-athletes as well as the Superior community through the sport they coach/teach.”
