The Superior High School softball team clinched the Lake Superior Conference championship with a 5-3 win over the Hermantown Hawks Monday evening at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The game was originally scheduled for April 25, but was rained out with the scored tied 0-0 and Hermantown batting with two outs in the bottom of the third inning.

Monday’s action began with both teams sporting new pitchers. With Superior’s Brandie Goldberg (hand) and Hermantown’s Breanna Thomas out with injuries, Mady Stariha started for Superior and quickly got the third out of the third inning.

With Katelyn Ewer pitching for the Hawks, Madison Sislo singled and scored on Olivia Hunker’s two-out single giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.

Superior added three runs in the fifth inning. Hannah Thul led off with a double, Erika Olson was hit by a pitch and both scored on Erin Thompson’s team-leading 14th double.

Thomson then scored on Lanie DeMeyer’s ground out.

Hermantown got within 4-1 in the sixth when Kailey Mihalik singled and scored on Jordyn Thomas’ double.

The Spartans got that run back in the top of the seventh when Thompson singled and eventually scored on Natalie Olson’s two-out single.

Things got interesting in the bottom of the seventh when Kendra Winberg singled, Payton Fath reached on an error and both scored on Mihalik’s double.

The game ended with Stariha’s fifth strikeout.

Stariha also allowed five hits and walked one batter in her win.

The Spartans finished with nine hits, two by Thompson and one each by H. Thul, DeMeyer, Stariha, Sislo, N. Olson, Hunker and Allie Thul.

The Spartans now host Wausau East in a WIAA Division 1 regional game at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
