SPARTAN ROUND-UP: Old Abes sweep SHS baseball team
The Superior High School baseball team lost twice to Eau Claire Memorial (7-0, 5-2) Saturday afternoon at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The Spartans managed just two Justin Reinkall singles in the opening game.
Lukas Gobrecht was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and one walk over four innings.
Gunner Johnson suffered the loss, allowing three unearned runs on one hit. He also struck out two and walked four in 2.1 innings.
Brandon Wing, Ben Rhodes, Reinkall, Michael LaJoie and Judd Erickson also pitched for the Spartans, allowing seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
For the Old Abes, Mitchell Froehlich was 3-for-3; Tanner Kohlhepp tripled and doubled; and Keagan Calchera doubled in two runs.
ECM scored all five of its runs in game two in the second inning, while Superior’s runs came in the fifth inning on Gunner Hansen’s two-run double.
Mason Moen took the loss for Superior, allowing four hits with a walk in two innings. Only one of ECM’s five runs was earned.
Smarzia, Wing and Reinkall finished up, allowing four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Adrian Bethel was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits with two strikeouts and one walk in three innings.
Sam Hanson had two of the Old Abes’ eight hits; Gobrecht had a hit and three RBIs; Kohlhepp knocked in two runs; and Adam Krajewski doubled.
Also on offense for Superior, Moen doubled and singled; Johnson singled twice; and Rhodes and Isaac Rios singled.
The Spartans’ doubleheader with Ashland scheduled for today, was played Monday.
Up next for Superior is the Hibbing Wood Bat Tournament Friday and Saturday.
On Friday the Spartans play Cloquet at 5:30 p.m. and Hibbing at 8 p.m. Saturday’s game is against Proctor at 1:30 p.m.
SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV lost to ECM, 5-0 and 6-1. Rios started the opener and pitched three innings allowing three runs on one hit and six walks while striking out four. Joe Barker also pitched three innings allowing two runs on six hits, and Austin LeJeune pitched one scoreless inning. The Spartans were held hitless. David Fender started game two, pitching three innings allowing two runs on five hits with one walk and one hit. LeJeune and Wyatt Reed each pitched two innings in relief. Will Schorr had both of Superior’s hits.

The Spartans golfed in the Rice Lake Invitational Thursday at Turtleback Golf Course then took part in Virginia’s two-day Northern Quarry Invitational at Giants Ridge.
Superior finished third in Rice Lake with a team score of 322.
All four Eau Claire Memorial golfers shot in the 70s to lead the Old Abes to the team title with a score of 307.
Zach Bernhardt shot 71 to edge Rice Lake’s Ben Resnick (72) for individual medalist honors.
For Superior, Taylor Burger finished fifth with a 77. Other Spartan scores included Cayden Laurvick, 80; Scott Archambeau, 82; Kiefer Eales, 83; and Grant Sorenson, 88.
Superior shot scores of 346 and 360 for a two-day total of 706 over the weekend at Giants Ridge.
Superior was led by Archambeau’s rounds of 78 and 86. Other Spartan golfers were Eales, 82-87; Dayton Podvin, 91-92; Ethan Buhr, 96-95; TJ Sitek, 95-98; and Ian Johnson, 105-122. Sitek was seeing his first varsity action as a freshman.
The Spartans close the regular season this week at the ECM Invite at 9 a.m. Tuesday, hosting the Lake Superior Conference championships at noon Wednesday, and at the Virginia Invite at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The Spartans lost 6-1 at Hudson on Thursday.
The Raiders scored three goals early in the half and their final two goals came in the last five minutes of the game.
Freshman Niya Wilson’s first varsity goal, with an assist from Ashley Welsh, got Superior within 3-1 just before halftime.
Sam Young finished with 13 saves for the Spartans, who play at Chippewa Falls today and at Menomonie Thursday. Both matches begin at 5 p.m.
Superior will also host a quad at 10 a.m. Saturday.
