SPARTAN ROUND-UP: SHS softball improves to 5-0

Erika Olson’s RBI triple in the fifth inning provided the go-ahead run in the Superior High School softball team’s 5-3 victory over the Bloomer Blackhawks Monday evening in Bloomer.

Olson, who finished with three of Superior’s 10 hits, then scored on Erin Thompson’s single.

Brandie Goldberg put the finishing touches on Superior’s victory by shutting the door on the Blackhawks over the final two innings.

Goldberg’s final line included allowing five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.

Aliya Seibel suffered the loss for Bloomer with eight strikeouts and three walks. On offense, Rilee Luzinski went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Chandler Zwiefelhofer tripled.

The Spartans also got two hits apiece from Goldberg and Lanie DeMeyer; singles from Mady Stariha and Allie Thul; and a sac fly RBI from Natalie Olson.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead when Hannah Thul walked to lead off the game, stole second, moved to third on E. Olson’s single and scored on a double steal.

Bloomer tied it up in the bottom of the first on Luzinski’s RBI double.

Seibel struck out five batters over the next two innings, but the Spartans took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning when Stariha and Goldberg singled and eventually scored on N. Olson’s sac fly and a passed ball, respectively.

Bloomer tied it up in the bottom of the fifth when Zwiefelhofer tripled and scored on an error, and Luzinski singled and scored on a ground out.

After the Spartans took their 5-3 lead in the fifth inning, they had chances to add to their lead but stranded the bases loaded in the sixth inning and then two more runners in the seventh.

The Spartans (5-0) are idle until playing at Hermantown on Tuesday, April 25.

Bloomer will take an overall record of 3-2 into its Heart O’ North Conference opener today at Chetek-Weyerhaeuser. The Blackhawks will then host Cumberland Thursday and Ladysmith for a doubleheader Saturday.
