SHS hockey and hoop teams in action; swim team opens season with a split

The Superior High School boys basketball team fell to 0-2 with a 53-31 loss at Esko Tuesday night.

Bryce Bottila had 12 points to lead the Eskomos, who improved to 3-0 and are ranked fifth among Class AA teams in Minnesota.

Justin Reinkall led Superior with 13 points. Aaron O’Shaughnessy added seven points on two 3-pointers and a free throw.

Superior opens play in the Lake Superior Conference at Proctor Friday and at Duluth Denfeld Tuesday. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.

SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV improved to 2-0 with a 58-49 win. Beau Severson had 17 points and Spencer Udeen eight. … Superior’s C team (2-1) won 40-16. The Spartans were led in scoring by JonTae Pederson with 11 points, Joey Barker with six and Isaac Rios with 5.

Girls basketball

The Spartan girls fell to 2-2 on the season with a 94-47 loss at Grand Rapids Tuesday night.

Four players scored in double figures, including Heaven Hamling with a game-high 23 points, as the Thunderhawks improved to 3-0.

Ellie Leadstrom led Superior with 13 points. Chloe Kintop and Lauren Gray both added eight.

Superior hosts New Richmond Friday and Duluth Denfeld Tuesday. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.

Girls hockey

Alee Milinkovich-Gray’s first career hat trick and Autumn Siers second shutout of the season led to a 6-0 victory for the Superior High School girls hockey over North Shore Thursday night at Raukavina Arena in Silver Bay.

The Spartans also got two goals from Taylor Routley and a goal from Sam Young as they improved to 2-4 on the season.

Emma Peterson added two assists and Destiny Holmes and Addie Young had an assist each.

The Spartans will host the same North Shore team at 7 p.m. Monday.

It will be an “Ugly Sweater” game for the Spartans, who will also be hold a food drive, along with four Superior youth girls hockey teams.

All non-perishable food will be donated to the local food shelf.

The Spartans began the week with a 6-3 loss at Moose Lake Tuesday night.

Peterson scored two of Superior’s goals and assisted on Sam Young’s goal that tied the game at 1-1 in the first period.

Moose Lake scored three power-play goals in the second period for a 4-1 lead, then scored twice in the opening 2:23 of the third period for a 6-1 lead.

Peterson’s first goal was assisted by Paige Lach and Addie Young, and Milinkovich-Gray assisted on Peterson’s team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Jessica Bird scored five of Moose Lake’s goals, and Ruby Mohelsky scored the other.

Siers had 18 saves for Superior and Jo Ruby Wekseth stopped 19 shots for Moose Lake.

Boys swimming

The Spartans split their season-opening duals, winning 84-71 at Rice Lake on Dec. 1 and losing at Menomonie 92-84 on Dec. 3.

Tradel Nickelson picked up six first-place finishes in the two meets. He won the 200 IM and 100 free at both events and teamed up with Isaac Ellis, Ben Tunell and Eric Elonen to win the 200 free relay at Rice Lake and the 400 free relay at Menomonie.

Nathan DeRoche won both diving events, the 100 butterfly at Menomonie and teamed with Elonen, Hintzman and Andrew Lisak to win the 200 medley relay at Rice Lake.

Ellis also won the 200 free at Rice Lake and the 50 free at Menomonie; Hintzman won the 500 free at Rice Lake; and Elonen won the 500 free at Menomonie.

The Spartans will compete in the Rhinelander Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday.
