SPARTAN ROUNDUP: SHS swim, cross country and tennis teams in action

The Superior High School girls swim and dive team opened its season with a 93-90 loss to Virginia Thursday and a seventh-place finish in its own 32nd annual Spartan Relays on Saturday.

The group of Erin Walpole, Madi Shovein and Carlee Noonsn finished second in the 300 breaststroke relay, while Alicia LeSage, Kate Lisak, Elisa Blank and Alaina Lamoreaux came in third in the diving relay.

The Spartans won eight of 12 events on Thursday led by Walpole and Noonan, who both finished first in four events.

Individually, Walpole won the 50 free and 100 breaststroke, and Noonan won the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.

The two also teamed up with Isabel Dokhanchi and Taylor Amundson to win the 200 medley relay and then with Emma Roden and Dokhanchi to win the 200 free relay.

Dokhanchi also won the 100 free and Alicia LeSage won the diving event.

Superior swims again in the Chippewa Falls Invitational at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Cross Country

 Cloquet won the boys title and Ashland was the girls winner in the Spartan Cross Country Invitational Thursday at the Nemadji Golf Course.

The Superior girls finished third and the boys took fourth.

Cloquet senior Isaac Boedigheimer outran Ashland’s Miller twins to win the boys individual title in 16 minutes, 59.5 seconds. Maury Miller was second in 17:06.5, and Walker Miller was third in 17:18.9.

Duluth East’s Izzy Sutherland was the girls individual winner in 20:21.

Brendan Crayne finished in 10th place for the SHS boys, and Ty Christianson was 12th.

The Spartan girls were led by Audrey Phillips’ fifth-place finish. Chloe Kintop also finished in 10th place, and Sophia Kintop was 12th.

Superior’s Lexi Jensen and Lexy Doolittle finished 1-2 in the girls JV race.

The Spartans run again at the Rice Lake Invitational at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls tennis

The Spartan girls suffered their first conference defeat with a 5-2 loss Thursday at Hermantown.

Superior’s wins were by Creede McClellan at No. 3 singles and Hannah and Allie Thul at No. 1 doubles.

McClellan dropped her first set to Hermantown’s Tori Thomas 7-6 (7-1) before rebounding and winning the next two sets 6-4 and 7-6 (7-1).

The Thul twins swept their match with Abby Halverson and Abby VanDeelen, 6-1, 6-2.

The Spartans play at Duluth Marshall at 4:15 p.m. today.
