Denfeld downs Spartan baseball team
Walks and errors proved costly for the Superior High School baseball team in a 7-4 loss to Duluth Denfeld Tuesday evening at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
Spartan pitchers walked six batters with three of them eventually scoring runs and Superior’s two errors helped the Hunters score the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning.
Gunnar Johnson and Keith Montgomery pitched for the Spartans, allowing six hits with six strikeouts and six walks.
Brodhy Russell was the complete-game winner for Denfeld, allowing six hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Jarrod Smith and Ben Gibson tripled and Cody Brown drove in two runs for the Hunters, who are in first place in the Lake Superior Conference with a 4-0 record.
Johnson had a RBI triple and a single for Superior. Montgomery added two hits, Brett Austin had an RBI single and three stolen bases, and Alex Kaske singled.
Denfeld took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Gibson tripled and stole home.
Superior took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
Montgomery singled and scored on Johnson’s triple. After Johnson scored on Austin’s single, Austin stole three straight bases, the last when he scored on a successful double steal.
Denfeld tied the game in the fourth. After loading the bases on walks, Johnson struck out two batters, but Brown followed with a two-run single.
The Hunters took a 4-3 lead in the fifth when Jarrod Smith walked and scored on Adam Shykes double and then made it 7-3 with a three-run sixth inning.
Superior’s final run came in the seventh when Kaske singled and eventually scored on an error.
Superior hosts Duluth Marshall at 4:30 p.m. and then play at Proctor at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartan JV defeated Duluth Denfeld 8-0. Spencer Udeen started and pitched five innings for the win, allowing one hit while striking out seven. Conner Fonger pitched the last two innings allowing no hits, one walk and striking out two. The Spartans had seven hits, with Mason Moen leading the way with a double, single and two RBIs. Fonger, Isaac Rios, Max Curtis, Drake Samarzia and Udeen had one hit apiece.
