Packers’ Rodgers breaks collarbone, may be out for season

Spartans host ECN with playoff berth on line

Superior’s quest for a playoff berth was put on hold after last week’s 21-17 loss at Rice Lake.

The Spartans led 17-9 until the Warriors’ Jake Roberts scored two short touchdowns in the fourth quarter. His third TD of the game was from 4 yards out with 48 seconds remaining.

While Rice Lake was undefeated (7-0 overall, 5-0 Big Rivers Conference) and ranked No. 1 among Division 3 teams in the state, the Spartans now host an Eau Claire North team that is only 2-5 overall and 0-5 in the BRC.

“We have a very resilient team and everyone realizes what’s at stake with this game — it’s very simple, we win and we’re in,” DeMeyer said. “We’re motivated, focused and ready to get back after it. It’s been a fun week of preparation and we’re going to compete with more urgency than ever.”

The Spartans (5-2, 3-2) will be playing at home for just the third time this season.

“It’s very nice to be back on our home field,” DeMeyer said. “The support we get from our home crowds is amazing and certainly helps raise the energy level.”

Despite poor records, ECN has a high-powered offense, led by running back Nick Greenlund and wide receiver Lukas Lanner.

Greenlund is second in the BRC with 782 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. He has also caught seven passes for 171 yards and another touchdown.

Lanner is second in BRC in receiving yards 367. Among his 13 catches are six touchdowns.

Quarterback Adam LaRock has played in five of North’s seven games, completing 50-of-84 passes for 828 yards, eight touchdowns and interceptions.

In last week’s 43-27 loss to River Falls, Greenlund had a 68-yard TD run, Lanner scored from 60 yards out and Lanner also TD passes to Greenlund and Steve Luther.

Huskies opened the season with wins over La Crosse Central (47-20) and La Crosse Logan (53-43). Since then they have lost conference games to Menomonie, Rice Lake, Eau Claire Memorial, Chippewa Falls and River Falls.

The Spartans will be playing without Joey Miller, who left last week’s game with a leg injury.

“Playing without Joey this week will be a challenge,” DeMeyer said. “We don’t have a definite diagnosis yet as to the extent of his knee injury, but he’s a senior leader and quite a presence up front for us.

“We have several candidates fighting to earn that spot and we are confident someone will step up and do the job.”

Today’s game begins at 7 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

• Superior’s senior players and cheerleaders, along with their parents, will be honored before the game at 6:30 p.m.
