PORTLAND, ME — Former Superior Spartan Brett Olson has signed a one-year, two way NHL contract with the Florida Panthers.

Olson will play for the Portland Pirates, the Panthers’ new AHL affiliate. Olson played last year for the San Antonio Rampage.

Olson, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound center, played in all 76 regular season games with the Rampage last season, his first in the Panthers organization. He scored 14 goals and added a career-high 31 assists for a total of 45 points, also a career high. He also finished the season with 58 penalty minutes and a plus-11 rating as he helped the Rampage win the AHL’s West Division title.

In three Calder Cup Playoff games with San Antonio, Olson notched an assist.

Prior to signing a one-year, two-way deal with Florida last season, Olson played two seasons (2012-14) for the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat, recording 62 points (25 goals, 37 assists) and 69 penalty minutes in 145 career games.

Before turning pro, he played four seasons of NCAA Division I men’s hockey with the Michigan Tech University Huskies and was their captain in both his junior and senior seasons. He twice earned WCHA All-Academic Team honors and finished his collegiate career with 42 goals and 51 assists.

The Pirates begin their first season as the top affiliate of the Panthers in 2015-16. The Pirates 23rd AHL home opener is set for Saturday, Oct. 17 at Cross Insurance Arena.
