CEC doubles up SHS hockey team

Koby Bender and Christian Pritchett scored goals and Eric Newman made 18 saves to lead Cloquet-Esko-Carlton to a 2-1 victory over the Superior High School boys hockey team Thursday night at Wessman Arena.

The Spartans, who fall to 8-13-1 overall and 2-3 in the LSC, defeated CEC 3-2 on Jan. 17 in Cloquet.

Mark Shold, with assists from Troy Shold and Braden LaPorte, scored Superior’s goal with four seconds remaining.

Peyton Flanders finished with 20 saves for the Spartans and Eric Newman had 18 saves for the Lumberjacks (10-10-3, 2-3-1).

Superior wraps up its regular season by hosting Hermantown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

SPARTAN SPIN: The WIAA playoffs begin Feb. 17. The sectional championship game is scheduled to be played in Superior on Saturday, Feb. 28.
