Spartan girls tee off on new season

The Superior High School girls golf team opened the 2014 season this week with meets at Spooner and New Richmond.

The Spartans fell at Spooner 173-220 on Tuesday finished in ninth place at the New Richmond Invitational on Wednesday. They were also in action at Thursday’s Hayward Invitational.

At Spooner’s Heart O’ North Conference dual meet, Amanda Hinaus picked up one conference point with a round of 46.

Other Spartans scores were Allie Shober, 53; Hailey Gronquist, 54; Jazmine Wills, 67; and Natalie Helgerson, 72.

Barron also competed in Spooner, but only had three players participate.

The Spartans carded a 473 as a team in New Richmond. River Falls won the team title with a 383.

Gronquist led all Superior golfers with a, 18-hole score of 111. Shober was a stroke back at 112, followed by Hinaus, 117; and Wills, 133.

Bre Nowak of Chippewa Falls was the meet medalist with an 84. River Falls’ Sidney Brunholzl was second at 86.

In Thursday’s Hayward Invitationa, Superior finished eighth with a 436.

Osseo-Fairchild won the team title at 375.

Hinaus finished in 10th place with a 97. Amanda Pederson of Osseo-Fairchild was medalist with an 85.

Othe Spartan scores were Allie Shober and Gronquist, 109s; Wills, 122; and Halie Mackie, 121.

The Spartans’ roster includes four seniors — Samantha Aune, Hinaus, Helgerson and Shober and four juniors — Gronquist, Halie Mackie, Kayla Raboin and Megan Struss.

“Our team strength this year is that we have a great group of veteran players that provide leadership to the younger players,” said second-year SHS coach Kayla Chilstrom.

Rounding out the SHS roster are Wills, a sophomore, and freshmen Emily VanErt, Connie Misfeldt and Abigail Johnson.

The Spartans are busy against next week beginning with playing Northwestern Monday at Botten’s Green Acres in Lake Nebagamon and then hosting their own invitational Wednesday at Nemadji Golf Course. Both meets begin at 9 a.m.
