Lindstrom, Anderson named top athletes at SHS

Superior High School announced the winners for the 2014 Senior Athlete of the year Awards at Honor Night on May 30 in the SHS Performing Arts Center.

Carter Anderson was named the Packy Paquette Male Athlete of the Year; Jessica Lindstrom was named the Spartan Female Athlete of the Year; and Alex Dzikonski, Emily LeSage and Rachal Fregin were named the Frank Cirilli Scholar Athletes.

Following are bios on each student/athlete.

Alex Dzikonski

Dzikonski earned six varsity letters, two in football and four in track and field. He was the captain of the football team his senior year and captain of the track and field team his junior and senior years.

Athletic awards in football include Iron Man of the Year, Coaches Award and Spartan of the Year. Awards in track and field include Spartan Spirit Award and Lake Superior Conference All-Conference in the 4x200 and 4x100-meter relays. He also claimed the regional track championship in the 4x200 relay last week in Rice Lake.

Academic honors include a GPA of 3.942, ACT score of 26 and a class schedule that included four AP classes and four CITS classes. He also has received numerous academic awards at SHS Honors Night and has been on the SHS A Honor Roll all four quarters in grades 9, 10, 11 and  first quarter of his senior year.

Dzikonski has volunteered in the Youth Football League, Special Olympics, Darrow Road Church’s Vacation Bible School, the Chamber Douglas County Youth Leadership Program, Bentleyville and the Oakland Town Hall Clean-Up.

He plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison next fall.

Emily Lesage

Lesage has earned four varsity letters, three in track and field and one in gymnastics.

Track and field honors include Most Improved Athlete, LSC All-Conference in the triple jump two years and a state qualifier for a relay. She was named Most Valuable Gymnast her senior season and advanced to track sectional this season by placing fourth at regionals in the triple jump.

Academic honors include a GPA of 3.756, ACT score of 29 and a class schedule that included six AP classes and four CITS classes. She has received numerous Honor Nights awards and is a Nelson Scholarship recipient.

Lesage has volunteered for Harbor House Shelter, Special Olympics as a coach for gymnastics and a unified partner in bowling, Youth Leadership, Youth Optimist, Reading Mentor, Senior Mentor and numerous volunteer hours as a member of the National Honors Society.

She plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison next fall and major in genetics.

Rachal Fregin

Fregin was a three-sport athlete all four years at SHS earning six varsity letters, one in volleyball, two in basketball and three in softball. She was a captain for basketball and softball teams.

Her softball awards include Most Improved Player and LSC All-Conference honorable mention. She was a member of the SHS girls basketball team that made back-to-back state tournament appearances, including a second-place finish her senior year. She also had the winning hit in both regional softball games last week.

Academic honors include a GPA of 3.864 and an ACT score of 26. She has been on the A honor roll every quarter in high school. Her schedule included three AP classes and three CITS classes. She also has volunteered at St. Francis Church and for the Chamber Youth Leadership Program.

Fregin plans to attend the University of Minnesota Duluth next fall for speech pathology.

Carter Anderson

Anderson participated in four sports and earned eight varsity letters, one in football, one in cross country, two in basketball and four in track and field.

Athletic awards for football include Coaches Award and in cross country the Most Improved Award. In basketball he was a captain, Superior Telegram All-Area, second team all-conference and Border Battle participant.

His track and field awards include Most Improved Award, MVP his sophomore and junior year, Coaches Award, all-conference his sophomore, junior and senior years and regional champion and state qualifier his sophomore, junior and seniors years in track and field.

Carter plans to attend to attend the University of Minnesota next fall in the school of business.

Jessica Lindstrom

Lindstrom was a three-sport athlete and earned 12 varsity letters, four each in volleyball, basketball and softball.

Athletic awards for volleyball include captain, MVP and all-conference first-team three years. Her basketball awards include captain, MVP, all-conference four years, AP All-State twice, WBCA first-team all-state twice, Player of the Year for the Duluth News Tribune three years and Superior Telegram for four years, ESPN Player of the Year Finalist, WIAA Scholar Athlete finalist, and state tournament all-tournament team. Softball awards include captain, first-team all-conference two years, all-region and Superior Telegram Player of the Year as a junior.

Lindstrom plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay next fall on a basketball scholarship.
