Bridget Manion scored 1:36 into the second overtime to give the Superior High School girls soccer team a 3-2 win over the Hayward Hurricanes Wednesday evening at the SHS soccer fields.

Rachel Dixon set up the winning goal with a throw-in near midfield. Manion took the pass, made a move around a Hayward defender on the right wing and kicked the ball high into the left side of the net just 1:36 into the second 10-minute overtime period.

The win moves the Spartans (12-1) back into first place in the Middle Border Conference with a record of 12-0. New Richmond (11-2-1) took over first place on Tuesday with a 4-0 win over Amery.

Superior and New Richmond play each other on June 2 in Superior.

Hayward (6-8-2, 5-5-1), which is in fourth place in the MBC, jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals by Sydney Kuschel and Noel Weber within a span of 1:12 midway through the first half.

The Spartans cut the lead in half 2:47 later when Missy Toland picked off a goal kick and fed Malley O’Brien, who scored her state-leading 34th goal.

O’Brien then helped Superior tie it up six minutes later when she assisted on Rachel Dixon’s goal. After taking a long pass from O’Brien, Dixon broke down the right wing and put the ball just inside the left post with 12:48 left in the first half.

The Spartans outshot the Hurricanes 6-2 in a scoreless second half, but had a good chance to take the lead when Anna Lurndal kicked the ball just over the cross bar, and actually hit the top of the net, with 33 minutes remaining.

Superior applied more pressure on Hayward goalkeeper Siri Doyle in the final three minutes of regulation, including when Sage Olson’s free kick was knocked out of bounds by a Hayward defender and Dixon got around a defender for an open shot on goal, but kicked the ball wide left.

Sammy Young finished with 6 saves for Superior and Doyle had seven saves for Hayward.

Superior hosts Spooner Thursday and Amery Friday. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m.
