Superior's Miller drafted by Waterloo Black Hawks (UPDATED)

Superior High School’s Aaron Miller was drafted by the Waterloo Blackhawks Tuesday in Phase II of the United States Hockey League draft.

The Blackhawks selected Miller in the eighth round, 135th pick overall.

“We’ve followed Aaron and are excited about the possibility for him to make our club,” Waterloo coach P.K. O’Handley said. “His offensive skills are outstanding and he had a fine career in high school at Superior.

“We’re looking forward to going through the process with Aaron and giving him every opportunity to be an impact for the Black Hawks.”

The Black Hawks made eight selections on Monday during Phase I of the USHL Draft, which focused on players born in 1998. Twenty-two more picks were made Tuesday in Phase II. All totaled, Waterloo chose 15 forwards, 11 defensemen, and four goaltenders.

“To all of the prospects selected, we say ‘congratulations and welcome to the Waterloo Black Hawks family’,” O’Handley said. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have this group joining us and look forward to working with each of them as the process continues in the coming weeks with our camps over the summer.”

The Hawks also sent draft picks to the Sioux City Musketeers in order to acquire forward Brock Boeser for next season. Committed to the University of Wisconsin, Boeser spent much of the winter skating for Burnsville High School. He appeared in eight USHL regular season games for the Musketeers, notching three goals and two assists, then added one more goal in eight playoff appearances.

Waterloo will meet the Indiana Ice in a best-of-five series for the Clark Cup (USHL playoff championship) beginning Friday at Young Arena in Waterloo.

The Black Hawks advanced to the championship round by defeating the Sioux City Musketeers three-games-to-one in the semifinals.  The Ice advanced after sweeping the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

NOTES: O’Handley, a 1985 graduate of Superior Senior High School, is also Waterloo’s general manager and interim president.
