Packers’ Rodgers breaks collarbone, may be out for season

O’Brien tallies nine goals in two victories

Superior High School’s Malley O’Brien had a sizzling week for the Spartan soccer team with nine goals over the course of two games.

The junior scored five goals Monday in Superior’s 7-4 victory over Baldwin-Woodville and added four more goals Tuesday in a 7-0 win over Barron. For the season, O’Brien has 12 goals in four games played.

The Spartans improved to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the Middle Border Conference with this week’s victories, yet the team is still waiting to play its home opener.

Superior’s soccer fields remained unplayable this week, but Spartan head coach Len Albrecht was hopeful the team would be able to host New Richmond at 4:30 p.m. May 2. The Spartans also have road games Monday at Ashland, Tuesday at Spooner and Thursday at Osceola.

“Tough week next week with games Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and our home opener on Friday,” Albrecht said.

In Monday’s victory over Baldwin-Woodville Superior trailed 2-1 after the first half but scored the first three goals of the second half to take over the lead. O’Brien scored unassisted to open the second half, and Tina Lurndal gave Superior a 3-2 lead on a pass from Bridget Manion. Manion then added an unassisted goal to make it 4-2, and O’Brien sealed the victory with a trio of unassisted goals later in the half.

Superior’s Sammy Young finished with five saves for Superior, and Kayla Fischer had eight saves for Baldwin-Woodville.

O’Brien and Manion gave the Spartans a fast lead Tuesday in their 7-0 victory over Barron.

O’Brien scored the first goal of the game unassisted and then took a pass from Manion to make it 2-0. Manion gave Superior a 3-0 lead going into halftime when she scored, assisted by Amber Welch.

Maddy Plunkett assisted on O’Brien’s third goal of the game to start the second half, and Welch followed with a goal from Ashlyn Meys. An unassisted goal by O’Brien made it 6-0, and Devon Moss finished the scoring with an assist from Lorena Lane.
