The Superior High School girls hockey team came a step short of advancing to the WIAA state tournament with a 5-0 loss to the St. Croix Valley Fusion Friday night at the New Richmond Sports Center.

The Fusion take a 19-7 record into next weekend’s state tournament while the Spartnas’ season ends with a record of 12-14.

The Spartans were playing in their first sectional championship game since 2006.

Andrea Eliason scored three of the Fusion’s goals, including two on the power play in the first period.

Eliason’s first goal came 10 seconds into a Spartan penalty with assists from Allie Demotts and Emma VanDell and it went to 2-0 when she put home the rebound with assists from Maddie Rowe and VanDell.

Hanna Zevenbergen made it 3-0 early in the second period and Eliason scored her third goal unassisted with 9:36 on the clock.

The Fusion’s final goal came in the third period.
