Season ends for SHS boys with loss at Marshfield

The Superior High School boys basketball team saw its season end with a 53-44 loss to the Marshfield Tigers in a WIAA Division 1 regional game Friday night in Marshfield.

The Tigers (18-6) went on to defeat Eau Claire North 49-32 Saturday night for a berth in Thursday’s sectional semifinal game against Hudson in Chippewa Falls.

The Spartans’ season under first-year coach Jake Smith ends with a record of 8-14.

Nate Sanders and Connor Gray led Superior with eight points apiece.

The Spartans got off to a slow start, falling behind 9-0 before Jon Lindberg scored on a layup four minutes into the game.

The Tigers eventually increased their lead to 18-5 before the Spartans scored six of the final seven points of the quarter on two baskets by Brett Lozon and one by Carter Anderson.

The Spartans looked like a different team at the start of the second quarter as they quickly cut the Tigers’ lead to 19-18. One basket during the spree was a 3-pointer by Matt O’Shaugnessy, his second 3-pointer of the game.

Marshfield got its lead back up to 23-18 before a free throw and then a 3-pointer by Jake Libal got the Spartans back within one point, 23-22.

The Tigers outscored the Spartans 5-2 in the final minutes of the second quarter for a 28-24 halftime lead.

Sanders opened up the third quarter with a basket to get Superior within 30-28 then Marshfield built a pair of seven-point leads, the latest 37-30.

Lozon nailed a 3-pointer but Marshfield scored the final four points of the third quarter for a 41-36 lead.

Marshfield gradually took its largest lead of the game, 52-40, on its way to outscoring Superior 20-8 in the fourth quarter.
