Kennelly, Carson and Miller advance to sectional wrestling meet

Three members of the Superior High School wrestling team advanced to next weekend’s sectional round of the WIAA individual wrestling tournament with their regional finishes Saturday at the Division 1 regional in Chippewa Falls.

Spartan sophomore Ross Kennelly (37-1) claimed the regional title at 160 pounds, while Superior teammates Emanual Carson and Joseph Miller placed fourth at 132 and 220, respectively.

Superior placed eighth as a team with 59 points. Menomonie won with 244.5.

“All of the boys wrestled very hard and represented Superior very well this weekend,” SHS coach Chip Brochu said.

Kennelly pinned Eau Claire North’s Keenan Yudes and defeated Chippewa Falls’ Lucas Gont and state-ranked Winston Bystrom of River Falls.

Carson lost his first match of the day, but rebounded by pinning Hudson’s C.J. Steiner and Eau Claire North’s Brett Watnemoe and defeating New Richmond’s Seth Leavens to finish in fourth place.

Miller (22-17) opened by pinning Sam Rhinehart of Eau Claire North, then lost to state-ranked Hudson’s Eliot Motu and Menomonie’s DJ Oas, He advanced after he won by rule over Rhinehart of Eau Claire North.

“Ross is having a great year,” Brochu said. “He’s been putting in a lot of work in and out of the room and its paid off.

“Manny is fun and exciting to watch and at any time he take you from to your feet to your back. And Joseph has been around the sport for a while now and coming off a football injury has put together a good year so far with 22 wins.”

The sectional meet is at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wausau West.
