Fusion foil Superior’s rally

The Superior High School girls hockey team fell to 9-11 with a 6-3 loss to the St. Croix Valley Fusion Saturday night at the Wildcat Center in River Falls.

Trailing 2-0 after one period, the Spartans took a 3-2 lead in the second period on a pair of goals from Emma Peterson and one goal from Ari Jago.

The lead was short-lived as SCV’s Maddie Rowe tied the game less than two minutes later and Andrew Eliason scored the eventual game-winner with 3:03 left in the second period.

The Fusion put the game away in the third period with two more goals from Eliason.

Justine Stenberg finished with 44 saves for the Spartans, and Carlie Christensen has 29 saves for SCV.

The SHS girls hockey team had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 6-2 loss to the Blizzard Thursday night in Siren.

The Spartans play at Hayward at 7 p.m. today, then wrap up the regular season playing at Hudson at 7 p.m. Friday and hosting New Richmond at 2 p.m. Saturday.

SPARTAN SPIN: SHS got the No. 5 seed for the WIAA playoffs and will play at 7 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Siren. ... Peterson leads the Spartans in scoring with 37 goals and 13 assists for 50 points.
