Spartans drop fourth straight

With their fourth straight loss, the Spartans fall to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in the Lake Superior Conference.

Denfeld, which also defeated the Spartans 4-3 in overtime in December, improves to 9-8-1 and 3-1.

The Spartans scored first when Anthony Bronson poked home a rebound four minutes into the first period. Aaron Miller assisted on the goal when he won a faceoff and put a shot on net. Bronson, who was near the left post, had an open net to shoot at for his sixth goal of the season.

Denfeld scored the next four goals, including Jake DeCaro’s power-play goal with 6:22 left in the first period.

Superior outshot Denfeld 10-6 in the second period but it was all Hunters on the scoreboard as Cody Budisalovich, DeCaro and Reid Lemker scored to give Denfeld a 4-1 lead.

The Spartans got within 4-2 early in the third period when Tyler Nystrom put the finishing touches on a give-and-go with Miller. Grant Hanson also assisted on Nystrom’s 12th goal of the year.

Denfeld sealed its victory on Steven Maciver’s goal less than three minutes later.

The Spartans outshot the Hunters 30-20, but Denfeld goaltender Wes Cook was on his game, finishing with 28 saves.

Paxton Paine had 15 saves for Superior.

The Spartans open play in the Green Bay Notre Dame Tournament Friday night at Wausau West. Superior will also play Stevens Point on Saturday and Marquette Sunday.
