The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks defeated the Superior High School girls hockey team 4-2 in a Tuesday afternoon matinee at the Superior Ice Arena.

The game began at 3 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for Jan. 6, but was postponed because of cold weather.

Emma Peterson and Tina Lurndal scored Superior’s goals and Justine Stenberg finished with 33 saves.

Rachel Macaulay scored twice and Mikayla Baker and former Superior Spartan Kailey Buhr both scored once for CEC. Sydnee Hietala had 18 saves for the Lumberjacks.

CEC led 2-0 after one period on Macaulay’s first goal of the game and Baker’s power-play goal.

Superior cut the lead in half on Peterson’s goal with 8:16 left in the second period. Moss started the play with a shot on goal. Peterson picked up the rebound, and despite Hietala getting a piece of her the shot, the puck got past her and trickled over the goal line.

CEC got that goal back a few minutes later when Buhr beat Stenberg from the slot and then made it 4-1 when Macaulay slipped a back-hander past Stenberg with 4;57 remaining.

The Spartans got within 4-2 just 34 seconds later when Lurndal scored during a scramble in front of the CEC net with assists from Kali Krivinchuk and twin sister Anna Lurndal.

The Spartans got the break they needed when a CEC player was given a 5-minute major penalty for boarding with 3:52 remaining. But the power play ended 1:32 later when a Spartan was called for checking.

The Spartans host Eau Claire at 6 p.m. Friday and play at Hayward at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
