Marshall tops SHS boys

The Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers got even with the Superior High School boys hockey team with a 4-2 victory Thursday night at Wessman Arena.

Superior defeated Marshall 2-1 in the consolation championship game of the Hilltopper Holiday Classic on Dec. 28.

The loss drops the Spartans to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the Lake Superior Conference.

Duluth Marshall improves to 8-5-1 overall and is in first place in the LSC at 3-1.

Superior scored the only goal of the first period when Aaron Miller notched his team-leading 16th goal at the 13:35 mark.

After a penalty-free first period, a handful of penalties were called in the opening minutes of the second period, including one on Superior goaltender Paxton Paine, who was called for slashing.

Marshall tied the game up on John McKenna’s second goal of the season with 6:49 left in the second period.

The Spartans regained a 2-1 advantage 27 seconds later when Daniel Burger scored on a wrist shot.

Two seconds after the Spartans killed off a penalty, the Hilltoppers tied the game at 2-2 when Lane Krenzen deflected a shot by Luke Pavelich past Paine. The goal came with 3:13 left in the second period.

The advantage went back to Marshall when Jack Dodd scored the game-winner 2:23 into the third period. The Toppers sealed the victory on Lenz’s goal with 2:14 remaining.

Paine finished with 23 saves for Superior and Alex Murray had 16 for Marshall.

Superior hosts Hermantown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
