The Superior High School wrestling team has six dual-meet wins at the midway point of it season, with wins coming over Ashland, 39-33; Shell Lake, 44-18; Proctor, 66-12; Madison East, 42-22; and Abbotsford/Colby, 42-18.

The Spartans also finished in third place at Northwestern’s Mackey Invite and seventh at the Eau Claire Holiday Tournament.

The latest victory was 36-31 over the Chetek Bulldogs Thursday night in the SHS gym.

“This group of young wrestlers has worked hard in the off season, they practice hard every day and it’s starting to show on the mat,” SHS coach Chris Brochu said.

A few of Superior’s mid-season standouts include, Nick Long, Emanual Carson and Ross Kennelly.

Long has 14 wins, including a 5-0 record at the Mackey Invite and receiving all-tournament honors.

Carson has 12 wins, including a 5-0 record with four pins in 3:14 in the Mackey Invite, where he received awards for fastest pin and was named to the all-tournament team.

Kennelly has 17 wins on the season, including 5-0  records and all-tournament honors at the Mackey Invite and Eau Claire holiday tournament.

“We’re looking forward to the second half of the season,” Brochu said. “The kids have put in a lot of work in at this point and we are hoping that it pays off with both team and individual success.”

Against Chetek, Superior had six wins, including pins by Billy Regner (182 pounds), Joey McDonald (195), Nick Long (120), Emanual Carson (132), Tyler Lehikoinen (138) and Ross Kennelly (160).

“Chetek is one of the top teams in the HON Conference,” Brochu said. “It was a very exciting night, with matches that were back and forth keeping the fans on the edge of their seats.”

Brochu said Carson’s match was the most exciting of the night.

“Emanual was trailing Michael Slagel, but then in the second period got in deep on a double leg, lifted Slagel off the mat and retuned him with a half-Nelson to get the pin,” Brochu said. “Lehikoinen was also in a battle with Samuel Newell that was tied late into the third when Tyler came up with a big throw and pin with two seconds remaining in the match.”

In JV action, Superior’s Adam Edwards two matches at 152 and De’Artis lost his match at 182.

“We wrestled with great energy and heart, as a coaching staff we could not be more proud of the way these young men fought tonight,” Brochu said. “They wrestled very aggressive form whistle to whistle and stayed off their backs.

“This was a big win for Superior wrestling; Chetek is one of the better teams in the HON.”

The Spartans will host the 31st annual Spartan Wrestling Classic at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Participating teams include Ashland, Bayfield, Eau Claire Memorial, Ladysmith, Northwestern, Northwood, Proctor and Shell Lake.
