Spartan girls roll past Hudson

The Superior High School girls basketball team continued to roll Friday night with a 78-43 victory over the Hudson Raiders.

“This was a big seeding game and a good road win,” SHS coach Phil Roe said.

Superior improves to 7-1 with the victory, while Hudson falls to 3-3.

The Raiders controlled the game early and actually led at the end of the first quarter, 17-12. Superior rallied in the second quarter to take a 33-28 lead at halftime, and the Spartans outscored Hudson 45-15 in the second half.

Sophomore Mackenzie Kmecik had a big game for Superior, scoring a career high 26 points.

“She really showed that she can be a force scoring,” Roe said. “Her play tonight makes us stronger as a team.”

Kmecik finished the night with a pair of 3-pointers, as did Hailey Kontny, who scored 22 points. Jessica Lindstrom added 15 points, Alyssa Correll had nine, Tailor Schuster had four and Elizabeth Kolanczyk had two.

Superior returns to Lake Superior Conference action at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Hermantown.

SPARTAN SPIN: With her 22 points on Friday, Kontny officially moved into second place on Superior’s all-time scoring list. She needed eight points to tie and nine points to surpass Lindsey Lindstrom’s career total of 1,312 points from 2007. Jessica Lindstrom, Lindsey sister, is currently first on the all-time scoring list.
