Spartans advance to Hilltopper Classic consolation championship game
The Superior High School boys hockey team advanced to the consolation championship game of the Duluth Marshall Hilltopper Holiday Classic with a 2-1 win over Delano, Minn., Friday afternoon at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Superior (4-6) opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to East Grand Forks on Thursday night.
All of the scoring on Friday took place in the first period.
Superior took a 1-0 lead at 3:11 when Aaron Miller deflected Grant Hanson’s shot from the right point past Delano goaltender Brett Norling. Tyler Nystrom also assisted on Miller’s team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Delano tied it up on Chet Halonen’s shorthanded goal nine minutes later.
Superior took the lead for good on Miller’s power-play goal with 1:25 left in the first period. Daniel Mikel, who missed the past two games with an illness, picked up his sixth assist of the season.
Superior’s Paxton Paine picked up the win in goal with 17 assists. Norling finished with 29 saves for Delano.
The Spartans (4-6) will play Duluth Marshall in the consolation championship game at 10:45 a.m. Saturday. The Hilltoppers advanced with an 8-2 win over Madison Edgewood.
SPARTAN SPIN: Each team was called for seven penalties for 17 minutes. … In other action, Mankato West advanced to the championship game with a, 8-2 win over Appleton. Green Bay Notre Dame and East Grand Forks played in the other semifinal game.

Superior lost to East Grand Forks 2-1 in the opening round of the tournament Thursday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
EGF outshot Superior 11-3 in the first period and in the process took a 2-0 lead as Brandon Loven scored 45 seconds into the game and Dixon Bowen scored at the 7:05 mark.
Superior’s lone goal was by Aaron Miller with four seconds remaining in the third period. Shane Tetzlaff assisted on Miller’s 10th goal of the season.
Paxton Paine finished with 30 saves for Superior and Josh Weber had nine saves for EGF.
