Spartans fall to Hunters in OT

Chris power-play goal in overtime gave the Duluth Denfeld Hunters a 4-3 victory over the Superior High School boys hockey team Thursday night at the Heritage Center in Duluth.

The Spartans took a 3-2 lead with Tyler Nystrom’s second goal  of the game 1:20 into the third period.

The Hunters tied it up with Steve Mciver’s shorthanded goal with 2:20 remaining in the third period and Opack’s game-winning came 1:31 into overtime.

Denfeld led 2-1 after one period with one of the goals coming on the power play.

Anthony Bronson scored his fifth goal of the season, and the Spartans’ first goal of the game, with an assist from Jesse Polson with 1:10 left in the first period.

Nystrom knotted the game up at 2-2 3:37 into the second period with help from Grant Hanson.

Superior took the lead early in the third period when Nystrom scored with an assist from Aaron Miller.

Paxton Paine finished with 16 saves for Superior and River Alander had 26 for Denfeld.

Up next for the Spartans is River Falls at 5 p.m. Saturday at Wessman Arena.

The Duluth Marshall Hilltopper Classic is next weekend at Mars Lakeview Arena. Superior opens against East Grand Forks at 8 p.m. Thursday at Mars Lakeview Arena. The Spartans will play at 3:15 or 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27 against either Delano, Minn., or Green Bay Notre Dame.

SPARTAN SPIN: Saturday’s game will be carried live at WNXR 107.3 FM. … Nystrom leads the Spartans with nine goals while Miller leads the team in scoring with four goals and 12 assists for 16 points.
