ASHLAND — Phillips’ Jeff Spacek gained an $800 paycheck after Saturday night’s “Modified Mayhem” feature at the ABC Raceway, highlighting a program during which the track honored its first-ever Hall of Fame inductees.
A windy, overcast afternoon turned clear and muggy after nightfall as 80 racers competed on another fast, racy track during the five-division AMSOIL Dirt Track Series program presented by the NAPA Auto Parts Stores of Ashland and Washburn.
Prior to the features, the first 12 inductees of the ABC Raceway Hall of Fame were introduced to an enthusiastic crowd. Three of the enshrined — the late Frank and Verna Brevak, who built the original race track; Northern State Bank; and the Vernon family and their business, Northern Clearing, Inc. — were chosen as unanimous Honorary Inductees by the Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee.
Also included were four in the Retired Driver category — Bob Brevak, Ron Hmielewski, Bob Root and the late Dwaine “Oulu” Erickson — and five in the Volunteers and Contributors category — Dennis Asbach, Ron and Jeannie Hmielewski, Bob Root and his late wife Sandy, Weaver Wherritt, and Earl and Chris Zar.
Dave Flynn of Superior followed up an impressive feature-winning run at AMSOIL Speedway on Friday night with his second win of the season here Saturday in the WISSOTA Super Stock 20-lap main event.
Flynn also started outside on the front row and was scored as the leader on every lap, but unlike Spacek he was seriously challenged for the lead throughout.
The first 18 laps ran off non-stop as Flynn tried to pull away from a fierce battle for second between Cory Casari, Nick Oreskovich and Scott Lawrence, all of whom got by pole starter Ken Truscott within the first few laps. On lap 6 Oreskovich and Lawrence moved into second and third, and within a lap Lawrence overtook Oreskovich and set his sights on Flynn, who had built up a half-second lead.
In just two laps Lawrence eliminated the deficit and worked Flynn over, moving to both the inside and outside lanes in an effort to shake the leader loose. But Flynn kept his cool and fended off every move offered by the 10-time defending champ.
Lawrence eventually settled for following in Flynn’s tire tracks for a while as the leaders drew up on slower traffic, and Casari — who took third on lap 11 — and Oreskovich copied the lead pair’s line.
With just two laps remaining Flynn and Lawrence tried to get by the slower Myron Basina, and Lawrence took a shot at the lead. But before the lap was completed Basina bobbled, causing the cars of fifth-place Shane Kisling and sixth-running Wayne Stricker to break loose and tag each other hard enough to knock both from the event.
With the green-white-checkered restart based the last completed lap, Flynn resumed from the point held on for a car-length advantage over Lawrence at the checkers and his second feature win here this season.
Casari and Oreskovich came home a close third and fourth, and Randy Spacek finished fifth for the fourth straight week here. DJ Keeler came home ninth and, by virtue of a ramdom draw and displaying the Raceway’s 50th Anniversary decal on his car, earned a $100 bonus.
