Reds take 3-game win streak into regional tourney

The Superior Reds American Legion baseball team went 3-0 over the weekend to finish its regular season on a three-game winning streak.

The Reds began the weekend with a 6-5 eight-inning win over West Duluth Friday at Wade Stadium, then swept Altoona 11-7 and 3-2 Saturday at home.

The Reds will take a 20-7 record into the Wisconsin AA regional tournament later this week at First National Bank Field in River Falls.

Superior opens against Menomonie at noon Thursday. The other semifinal game is River Falls vs. New Richmond. The winners and losers will play at either 5 or 7:30 p.m., also Thursday.

The tournament runs through Saturday.

Reds 6, West Duluth 5

Reds overcame eight fielding errors to win in extra innings Friday at Wade Stadium.

Matt Strum and Austin Sears led the Reds with four hits apiece.

Strum’s final hit drove in Conner Fonger from second base with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning.

Sears also finished with three RBIs; Fonger had two hits; CJ Fortune had a hit and two RBIs; and Gunner Johnson and Derek Fender added a hit each.

Justin Reinkall pitched the first six innings for the Reds, allowing six hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Strum picked up the win by striking out two and keeping West Duluth scoreless over the final two innings.

Superior 11, Altoona 7

Gunner Johnson’s three-run home run led the Reds past Altoona in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Johnson finished with two hits and four RBIs. He was also the winning pitcher, allowing five hits and one earned run with nine strikeouts and four walks in four innings.

Brandon Wing pitched the final three innings, allowing five hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Reds also got three hits and two RBIs from Fonger; three hits and an RBI from Michael LaJoie; three hits from Sears; a double, single and RBI from Ben Rhodes; two hits from Fortune; and a single from Wing.

The Reds scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning then plated the winning run in the bottom of the fourth.

Superior had four hits, one each from Rhodes, Fortune, Johnson and Mason Moen.

Moen was also one of three pitchers for the Reds, along with Wing and Strum. The three allowed three hits with eight strikeouts and seven walks.
