Reds keep on winning

The Superior Reds’ three-run sixth inning provided the winning runs in a 5-2 win over Hayward Thursday night at Morrie Arnovich Field.

The Reds then improved to 6-0 with a 5-4 win over Hermantown Friday at the Land of the Loon American Legion Tournament in Virginia.

In the win over Hayward, starting pitcher Austin Sears allowed one unearned run and seven hits over the first five innings before giving way to Matt Strum, who pitched the final two innings for the win.

Strum pitched out of jam in the sixth inning when Hayward had runners on second and third with nobody out and the scored tied 2-2. Strum kept Hayward off the board by inducing a ground out and striking out two batters.

The Reds took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth thanks in part to RBI doubles by Dominic D’Auria and Ben Rhodes.

The Reds finished with five hits. Justin Reinkall added a double; Gunner Johnson had an RBI single; and Bryce Connolly singled. Brandon Wing also added an RBI.

The Reds host Chippewa Falls at 7 p.m. Wednesday and then will play in the Duluth Lakeview Classic this weekend.

NOTES: In other Loon Tournament action, Nissawa defeated International Falls 18-5, and Virginia lost twice, 5-4 to West Duluth and 6-3 to Grand Rapids. No other information was available at press time.
