Reds off to 3-0 start

The Superior Reds started the season off on the right foot with three wins in three games.

The Reds opened the season with a 4-1 win over Cloquet Friday at Morrie Arnovich Field, then defeated Hudson and Altoona Saturday at the Cinder City Wood Bat Tournament in Altoona.

Sunday’s games were cancelled because of rain.

The Reds (3-0) host Duluth Lakeview at 6 p.m. Wednesday and Hayward at 7 p.m. Thursday. Both games will be played at Morrie Arnovich Field.

Reds 4, Cloquet 1

Brandon Wing went the distance to pick up Friday’s win. Wing limited Cloquet to just three hits and allowed only four baserunners while getting defensive help on 11 groundouts. He also struck out four and walked one.

On offense, Bryce Connolly had two hits; Justin Reinkall doubled; Dominic D’Auria had two hits; Matt Strum and Wing had a hit and RBI each; and Austin Sears singled.

Reds 10, Hudson 7

The Reds pounded out 13 hits in their win over Hudson.

Mason Moen was the winning pitcher and Reinkall picked up the save.

Superior held leads of 5-1, 8-1 and 10-3 until the fifth inning, when Hudson mounted a comeback.

Hudson scored two runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to close the lead to 10-7 but couldn’t get any closer as it went down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning.

At the plate, Reinkall doubled, singled twice and had an RBI; Sears had three hits and an RBI; Strum and Bryce Connolly both had a hit and two RBIs; D’Auria and Judd Erickson had a hit and RBI each; Isaac Rios had a sac fly; Michael LaJoie doubled; and Ben Rhodes and Conner Fonger both singled.

Reds 6, Altoona 3

Strum picked up the complete-game win, allowing five hits with eight strikeouts.

Superior only had three hits but took advantage of six walks, two hit batters, a wild pitch and an error.

Reinkall tripled and knocked in one run; Sears and Tradel Nickelson singled; Strum had two RBIs; and Ben Rhodes had one RBI.
