Blues split with West Duluth
The Superior Blues and West Duluth split a Junior American Legion doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Morrie Arnovich Field.
West Duluth won an error-filled first game 18-9, and the Blues bounced back in a big way to win game two 10-0 in five innings.
David Fender was the complete-game winning pitcher, allowing three hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
The Blues had 12 hits, led by Conner Fonger, who was 2-for-4 with six RBIs.
Also for Superior, Ben Rhodes was 3-for-3; Spencer Udeen tripled and singled; Isaac Rios had two hits; and Michael LaJoie, Jakob Holmlund and Fender had a hit apiece.
Holmlund and Derek Fender added RBIs.
There were 15 errors in the opening game, including eight by Superior.
Superior had nine hits, led by Holmlund, who was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.
Tradel Nickelson added a hit and two RBIs; and Fonger, Udeen, LaJoie and Judd Erickson had a hit each.
Isaac Rios took the loss for the Blues. He allowed six runs in 1 1/3 innings, walked five and struck out two. Also pitching for Superior were Derek and David Fender, Brandon Wing and Fonger.
The Blues (10-10), played at Proctor Thursday, host Duluth Marshall at noon today and host Chippewa Falls at 1 p.m. Saturday. All three dates are doubleheaders.
The Blues will also play one game at Ashland at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
