Blues open at Altoona

The Superior Blues (16-and-under) baseball team opened its season with a 1-3 record during a weekend trip to Altoona and Chippewa Falls.

The Blues split a doubleheader with Chippewa Falls but suffered losses to Altoona and Chetek.

Superior, which played at Cloquet Monday afternoon, hosts Hayward at 5 p.m. Thursday at Morrie Arnovich Field. The Blues will then play Prescott and Rice Lake Saturday in Rice Lake.

Altoona 4, Blues 0

The Blues lost despite outhitting Altoona 3-2.

Brandon Wing suffered the loss, allowing all four runs with six strikeouts and four walks. David Fender and Mason Moen got the final three outs with three strikeouts and three walks.

Conner Fonger, Ryan Hughes and Nash Tollers had Superior’s hits.

Chippewa Falls 6, Blues 5

Superior also outhit Chippewa Falls 6-5 in a game that was called in the sixth inning due to lightning.

Michael LaJoie suffered the complete-game loss, allowing six unearned runs with nine strikeouts and three walks. Superior committed eight errors.

Trailing 6-0, the Blues’ first run came on Hughes’ RBI double in the fourth inning.

The remaining Blues runs came in the fifth inning. Fonger had an RBI double, Fender walked with the bases loaded, Tradel Nickelson had an RBI single and Hughes plated a run with a sac fly.

Nickelson finished with two hits and Moen and Max Curtis added a hit each.

The Blues had 14 hits, led by Ben Rhodes, who had three of them along with an RBI.

Fender added a pair of two-run singles; Isaac Rios, Curtis and Spencer Udeen had two hits each; and Fonger singled. Judd Erickson chipped in with an RBI.

Moen, Erickson and Rios pitched for the Blues, allowing seven hits with six walks and six strikeouts.

Chippewa Falls 10, Blues 1

In game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, Chippewa Falls scored twice in the first inning and never looked back.

Superior’s lone run came in the second inning when LaJoie scored on Nickelson’s ground out.

The Blues had two hits, one each from Jakob Holmlund and Hughes.

Chetek 14, Blues 4

Chetek only outhit Superior 7-6 in the six-inning game.

Holmlund had two of Superior’s hits with an RBI and run scored.

Rhodes also had two hits and Rios and Erickson had a hit each.

Chetek scored four runs in the first and fourth innings and three runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Blues scored single runs in the first and second innings then twice in the third.

Fonger scored two of the Blues run, including one on a passed ball.
