Reds drop opener at Grand Rapids
The Superior Reds American Legion baseball team opened its season with a 4-3 loss at Grand Rapids Thursday night.
The Reds scored all of their runs in the third inning, thanks to three singles, a walk, wild pitch and a throwing error.
Matt Strum knocked in one of the runs with a single. Sean O’Neill doubled, singled and scored a run; Josh Tomczak and Bryce Connolly both singled and scored a run.
The Reds also got doubles from Justin Reinkall and Caden Tchop and singles from Hunter Hockenbrock and Dominic D’Auria.
Hockenbrock, Keith Montgomery and Strum pitched for the Reds, allowing six hits with three strikeouts and six walks.
Lane Gerber picked up win for Grand Rapids (2-0), pitching four scoreless innings in relief.
Grand Rapids tied the game up with a run in the third inning and two more in the third.
The winning run came in the sixth inning when Evan Mischke’s lead-off single was followed by a hit batter, a sacrifice bunt and a one-out RBI single by John Baker.
The Reds will play in the Altoona Cinder City Days Tournament this weekend. On Saturday they will play Eau Claire at 4:30 p.m. and Altoona at 7 p.m. On Sunday the Reds play Osseo at 10 a.m.
