Superior and Northwestern win regional crowns

The Superior High School Spartans and Northwestern Tigers were both crowned regional champions in their respective divisions Saturday night.

The Spartans defeated the Neenah Rockets 62-55 in overtime in a WIAA Division 1 playoff game in the SHS gym.

The Tigers defeated the Hayward Hurricanes 58-51 in the Division 3 regional championship game in Maple.

Up next for Superior is the state’s top-ranked Stevens Point Panthers, who advanced with a 105-57 win over Chippewa Falls. The sectional semifinal game is at 7 p.m. Thursday at Wausau West.  Point is 24-0 on the season.

The winner will play either Oshkosh North or Appleton West in the sectional championship game Saturday in Menomonie.

Northwestern will now play Prescott, which advanced with a 72-46 win over Barron. The sectional semifinal game is at 7 p.m. Thursday at River Falls. The winner will play either Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau or Black River Falls in the sectional final game Saturday at Eau Claire North.

In Division 5 action, Solon Springs’ season came to an end with a 75-48 loss to Luck Saturday night in Hayward.
