Rookey advances to state wrestling tourney

Justin Rookey Jr., a second-grade student at Great Lakes Elementary, has qualified for the Wisconsin State Wrestling Tournament.

Rookey, a first-year wrestler in the Superior Youth Wrestling program, qualified for state with a first-place finish at the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Kids Folkstyle Regional Qualifier last weekend in River Falls. The state tournament is this weekend at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Rookey, who also qualified for the Minnesota Jaycees State Tournament, now has a record of 16-5, including 15 pins.

Three other members of the Superior wrestling program competed at River Falls, including Gage Rusk, Joshua Johnson Jr., and Eric Winterscheidt.

Rusk went 1-2 at 54 pounds; Johnson was 1-2 at 75 pounds; and Winterschedit was 0-2 at 81 pounds.

Joshua Johnson Jr. (75) — def. Logan Carmody (SVE), 10-1; lost to Derek Zschernitz (NGL), 10-0; lost to Ethan Duck (Cadott Wrestling Club), 10-0.

Justin Rookey Jr. (105) — pinned Benjamin Helminski (Menomonie Wrestling Club), 0:19.

Eric Winterscheidt (81) — pinned by Koy Hopke (Shell Lake), 2:50; lost to Cole Pfeiffer (Cadott Wrestling Club), 2-0.
