Flaherty advances to state wrestling tournament

Superior’s Oscar Flaherty advanced to the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation State Championships with a first-place finish at Saturday’s Kids Folkstyle Qualifying Tournament in River Falls.

The event in River Falls was onc of eight state qualifying tournaments across the state. The top two wresters in each age and weight bracket from each of the eight districts advance to the state championships, which will be held March 28-29 in Madison.

Flaherty, won the 1990-2000 bracket for boys 211 to 240 pounds with a perfect 3-0 record. The eighth-grader at the Superior Middle School pinned Gage Brown from Boyceville at 0:12; pinned Nick Becker from Hudson at 1:35; and beat Spooner’s Joshua Carroll, 5-0.

Also competing  out of the Superior Wrestling Club at the qualifier, but not advancing to state, was Jack Androsky.
