Holiday season includes 10 tournaments
A number of local teams, both collegiate and high school, will be competing in various holiday tournaments this week.
The only home event will be the Superior Showdown, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team.
The inaugural Superior Showdown will take place Friday and Saturday at Wessman Arena.
Semifinal games Marian vs. Milwaukee School of Engineering at 3 p.m., followed by the Yellowjackets hosting Concordia College (Moorhead).
The winners and losers will play each other at 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday.
Tournament passes are $20 for adults and $12 for seniors and non-UWS students. UWS students and children five and under are free.
The tournament festivities will begin with a banquet in the Great Room of the Yellowjacket Union on the UWS campus on Friday. Parents, fans and other guests wishing to attend the banquet should register online prior to the event at www/uwsuper.edu/yellowjackets/events/index.cfm.
Banquet tickets are $20.
The event begins at 10:45 a.m. with a greeting by Nick Bursik, UW-Superior Director of Athletics. The meal at 11 a.m. will be followed by comments by participating coaches and then a guest speaker.
The Superior High School boys hockey team will play in the Showdown in Title Town Wednesday through Friday at the Cornerstone Community Center in Ashwaubenon.
The Spartans will play the West Salem Panthers for the first time ever at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The Panthers are 6-2 overall with their wins over Mosinee, Viroqua, Tomah, La Crescent, Black River Falls and Baldwin-Woodville. Their losses are to Onalaska and La Crosse Logan/Central.
The Spartans will play in the Culver’s Cup Wednesday through Friday at Madison Ice Arena and Hartmeyer Ice Arena.
Superior will face Onalaska in one quarterfinal game at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Other quarterfinal games are Stevens Point vs. St. Croix Fusion; Middleton vs. the Brookfield Glacier; and University School of Milwaukee vs. Lakeland.
Championship semifinals and consolation semifinals will be Dec. 28, with final games Dec. 29. The championship is set for 2:45 p.m. Dec. 29 at Madison Ice Arena.
The Spartans will compete in Shawano High School’s Sun Drop Shootout at the Kress Center in Green Bay.
Superior plays Menasha at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday and Green Bay Notre Dame at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
The Northwestern boys will be at the Rice Lake Tournament, playing Ashland at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The second semifinal game is Osceola vs. Rice Lake at 7 p.m.
The third-place and championship games are Friday.
Superior will play in the Wisconsin Rapids Tournament, opening against the host Red Raiders at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The Spartans will play either Madison LaFollette or Rhinelander at noon Friday.
The Northwestern girls will play in the Cloquet Tournament with games at 1 p.m. Wednesday and 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Tigers will be at the River Falls Invitational Thursday and Friday, while the Spartans will compete at UW-Eau Claire at 9:15 a.m. Friday.
The Eagles boys basketball team will play Prairie Farm at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Clayton Tournament.
The Solon Springs girls are off until playing at Butternut on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
The Yellowjackets will play in the Wartburg Holiday Tournament in Wavery, Iowa.
UWS will play the host Knights in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Friday.
The third-place and championship games will be played Saturday.
UWS isn’t playing in any tournament, but will still play twice this weekend.
The Yellowjackets will play St. John’s at 7 p.m. Friday in Collegeville, Minn., then host Bethel on Saturday. Both non-conference games begin at 7 p.m.
