The Superior High School boys hockey team ran its unbeaten streak to five games with a 5-1 win over the Antigo Robins Saturday at the Antigo Ice Arena.

The Spartans, who were coming off a 6-2 win over the North Shore Storm Thursday night at Wessman Arena, showed off a well-balanced offensive attack with different players scoring goals in each game.

Grant Sorensen, Tucker Stamper, Cayden Laurvick, Joe Eliason and Kaleb Ullan scored against Antigo as the Spartans improved to 7-2.

Caleb Welch picked up the win for Superior with 28 saves.

After Sorensen and Stamper gave Superior a 2-0 lead early lead, Brennan Spencer scored for Antigo with 7:11 remaining in the first period.

Welch was perfect the rest of the way, stopping nine shots apiece in the second and third period.

Sorensen’s goal, with assists from Laurvick and Trevor Dalbec, was 2:09 into the game, while Stamper’s goal, with help from Alex Hanson, came just 1:43 later.

After Brennan’s goal, Laurvick scored on a power play with help from Ty Christianson and Dalbec.

After a scoreless second period, Eliason scored his first varsity goal 9:35 into the third period with help from Derrick Mattson.

Ullan finished the scoring on a power play with 25 seconds remaining. Gunnar Hansen helped out Ullan’s goal.

Superior is now 2-3 all-time against Antigo.

The Robins defeated the Spartans 1-0 and 2-1 the past two seasons; Superior beat Antigo 7-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2005 state tournament; and Antigo defeated Superior in the 1993 state championship game 2-1 in overtime.

In Thursday’s win over North Shore, the Spartans had 12 different players pick up points.

Stamper started things off with a short-handed goal 6:14 into the first period.

The Storm tied it up six minutes later on Mason Myer’s power-play goal, but the Spartans finished the first period with Laurvick and Sorensen scoring 13 seconds apart.

Sorenson’s goal came with one second remaining in the period.

Kobe Hansen scored the only goal of the second period and Luke Drougas and Ullan added third-period goals.

Christianson picked up two of Superior’s assists. The other assists were by Blake Hanson, Dalbec, Ullan, Mattson, Laurvick, Hansen and Max Curtis.

Welch picked up the win in goal with 15 saves. Cameron Roy had 29 saves for the Storm.

Superior also defeated North Shore 7-0 last year in its first meeting with the combined team from Silver Bay and Two Harbors.

The Spartans hadn’t played a team from either Silver Bay or Two Harbors since a 15-1 win over Silver Bay on Jan. 8, 2008. The last time Superior and Two Harbors played was a 3-1 Spartan win during the 2005-06 season.

Superior leads the all-time series with Silver Bay 47-8 and Two Harbors 43-8.

The Spartans host Proctor at 7:15 p.m. today and play Duluth Denfeld at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at the Heritage Center.

Thursday’s game will be televised by My9.
