College men's hockey: UMD to play in North Star College Cup

Organizers announced Thursday that the tournament involving Minnesota's Division I programs will be called the North Star College Cup.

The inaugural tournament will be held Jan. 24-25 at St Paul's Xcel Energy Center. The name was selected after a fan vote was tallied and input from head coaches and administrators at all five schools was considered.

Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State-Mankato will play in the debut event. Bemidji State is idle this year.

Minnesota Duluth and Mankato will face off in one semifinal, while Minnesota and St. Cloud State meet in the other.

  • The National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced Thursday it will recognize the top players and coach with postseason awards. Awards will be handed out for the league's top player, goaltender, defenseman, forward, rookie, offensive defenseman, defensive forward and coach. An all-conference first and second teams and an all-rookie team also will be determined via vote by head coaches and a designated player.
