SPARTAN ROUND-UP: Gymnasts and boys swimmers in action

The Menomonie Mustangs spoiled the Superior High School gymnastics team’s home opener with a 125.68-112.88 win Tuesday night at the Twin Ports Gymnastics Center.

The Spartan JV came out victorious with a 23-12.45 win.

The Spartans’ roster this season includes 12 athletes, including Megan Hansen — the only senior.

The remaining roster includes juniors Alaina Lamoreaux, Madison Sislo and Jazmine Wilkinson; sophomores Novalee Flores, Jaidyn Hase, Chloe Hofman and Alyssa Nelson; and freshmen Taylee Anderson, Reese Deyo, Adrianne Krueger and Payton Rusk.

The Spartans are back in action Jan. 5 when they host River Falls and Hudson at 6:30 p.m.

Boys swimming

The Spartans went 1-1 at Tuesday’s Twin Ports Triangular at Ordean/East Middle School.

Team Duluth went 2-0 with 174 points. Superior finished with 82 points and Duluth Marshall-Proctor had 42.

Duluth’s Ryan Zelen set two pool records during the event in the 100 butterfly and 50 free.

Zelen recently competed in an elite swim meet at the University of Minnesota against nationally ranked swimmers both high school and college.

Duluth swimmers won all 12 events.

Superior’s top finisher was Ben Nintzman, who was second in the 100 breaststroke.

Third-place finishers for Superior were Jimmy Peterson (50 free and 200 free); Andrew Lisak (200 IM); Mike Barnaby (diving); Nate Peterson (100 butterfly); and Dylan Evavold (100 backstroke).

The foursome of Hintzman, Lisak and Nate and Jimmy Peterson also finished third in the 200 and 400 free relays.

Superior will swim in the Eau Claire Memorial Santa Invitational at 12:30 Saturday.

Girls hockey

Pairings have been released for the Culver’s Cup girls high school hockey tournament Dec. 27-29 at Madison Ice Arena and Hartmeyer Ice Arena.

Superior will face Onalaska in one quarterfinal game at 3 p.m. on Dec. 27.

Other quarterfinal games are Stevens Point vs. St. Croix Fusion; Middleton vs. the Brookfield Glacier; and University School of Milwaukee vs. Lakeland.

Championship semifinals and consolation semifinals will be Dec. 28, with final games Dec. 29. The championship is set for 2:45 p.m. Dec. 29 at Madison Ice Arena.

All-tournament passes are $12 for adults and $7 for students, youth and senior citizens. Single-game tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students, youth and senior citizens.
