Holmes named Alfreeda Goff Athlete of the Year
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior Leah Holmes was named the Alfreeda Goff Athlete of the Year for the track and field indoor season, the Horizon League office announced Friday.
Holmes, a 2013 graduate of Superior High School, was also named athlete of the year and conference champion in cross country in November.
“This is an awesome honor for Leah and she is completely deserving of this,” said Pete Corfeld, UW-Milwaukee head coach. “Ever since she won cross country this fall, that has been a total confidence boost for her to go after any race — no matter the distance — and that has shown in her results.
“She’s a program maker. It’s great that she is realizing her potential, especially in our program. We are incredibly proud of her and are excited to see her continue to grow.”
Holmes has finished first or second in all but two events so far this season and is ranked first in the Horizon League in the mile, second in the 800-meter run and third in the 3,000-meter, despite it being her first indoor collegiate 3K.
The junior set new personal records in all three events, and her times for each rank in the top-10 in program history. Holmes’ time of 4 minutes, 55.87 seconds in the mile ranks second all-time for the Panther women.
She has also helped the Milwaukee distance medley relay team post the fastest time in the league this season at 11:56.36. That time also ranks second in school history and just outside the top-100 in the nation.
