Sports Echoes - Feb. 4

The Superior Central Vikings clamped down on Superior Cathedral’s high scoring Mike Rookey, allowing him to score only two field goals but the Panthers still managed to turn a 59-47 win and remain in contention for at least a share of the city high school basketball title. They kept fouling Rooking to keep him from scoring from the field, but he had the last laugh — he made 15-of-18 free-throw attempts to pile up 19 points. Chuck Barnard led the Vikings with 21 counters. (1962)

Terry Harris pulled out all the stops, scoring 38 points for his UW-Superior team as it taught an 89-60 basketball lesson to the UW-Platteville Pioneers. Ken Frierson and Clendon Gustafson each added 12 points to the Yellowjackets’ total. UWS improves to 7-12 overall and 4-6 in the strong Wisconsin State University Conference. (1964)
