TIGER ROUND-UP: Girls win regular-season finale

The Northwestern High School girls basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a 51-30 win over the Ladysmith Lumberjills Friday night in Maple.

The Tigers finish the regular season with a 15-7 record and now host Spooner at 7 p.m. today in a WIAA Division 3 regional opener. Northwestern defeated Spooner twice this season.

The winner will play at No. 4 Amery Friday.

A strong first half keyed Friday’s win as the Tigers held a 33-10 lead at the break.

Senior Katie Lundeen led the Tigers with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior sharpshooter Mac Correll had 12 points on four 3-pointers and dished out nine assists and Karsyn Jones added 13 points.

Emily Egle lead the Lumberjills (6-16) with nine points.

TIGER TALES: Lundeen, Sam Hoegan and Sydney Anderson were honored Friday on Senior Night. … Correll was the leading three-point shooter in the state in Division 3 entering the week, making 74-of- 170 attempts for a 43.5 percent. The top two shooters in each division advance to a shoot off at the state tournament. … Northwestern finished third in the Heart O’ North Conference with a 10-4 record. Bloomer upset Hayward Friday 47-34 to force a tie for the HON championship as they both finished with conference records of 13-1.

Boys basketball

The Cumberland Beavers overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the Tigers Thursday night in Maple.

The Tigers opened up a 33-23 lead at the intermission before the Beavers turned the tables with a 40-24 advantage over the final 17 minutes.

Kobe Berghammer led Cumberland with a game-high 26 points.

Kade Bartelt led the Tigers with 21 points, which included four 3-pointers. Brody Payton was next with 15 points.

The Tigers wrap up the regular season Thursday at Ladysmith.

Northwestern is the No. 7 seed for the WIAA playoffs and will host No. 10 Baldwin-Woodville on Feb. 27.
